Icebreakers Galore! – 17th February

It is always a very special time when something is done for the very first time. In our last meeting we had the pleasure of having not one, not two but three icebreakers and a first advanced speech to boot. The show was opened by legendary debater and toastmaster of the evening Paul Carroll, ably assisted by Lindsey doing his very first role as timekeeper. Closing the functionary team were grammarian Marina and vote counter and sergeant at arms, Edwin.

Rosie started off the speeches with her Icebreaker ‘Influential People’ on who influenced her life so far, including her brother due to take up the Arch to Arc triathlon this year. Eddie followed her with ‘A Fortunate Life’ tracing his journey from Ghana, to France and eventually to ten years initially unexpected years in London. Prateek closed off with a punchy speech ‘Why live an ordinary life?’ and his desire to stay true to his dreams and ambitions. Daniela then did her firsts speech from the Speeches by Management manual, where she role-played taking over the management of an IT Service team and tacked a Q&A session from us posing as her employees.

Rising up to the challenge of evaluating these four speeches, were Terry, Fahad, Sergey and Marina.

Club sponsor Warren Sheng launched a table topic session themed on China, but also incorporating other very open ended questions such as “where will you do in two years”. Evaluating the entire evening was district 91 PR officer Dorothea Stuart.

Escalating the Vision – 3rd February

January is now gone but February started with a bang on Tuesday! Our Toastmaster of the evening was Kohinoor from our closely associated club of Connected Speakers London. Operating our unique timing light was Daniela doing the time management project of her Competent Leadership manual. The tempo of the evening escalated by one notch with Terry as our grammarian of the evening. Completing the team of functionary, was our glamorous Rosie as vote counter.

Club President’s Florian Bay opened the speeches with the vision speech from the High Performance Leadership manual. London Victorians journey only began recently, but the vision for the club is anything but unambitious! Club secretary Ayokunle took up the stage with a journey through the various stages of his quest for happiness. A roast of our area 6 governor George that lives and breathes Toastmasters followed up aptly delivered by Fahad. Sergey concluded the first part of the meeting with an appeal to take control of our destinies and to open up the doors that pop up in our lives. Using the example of a former once hesitant Toastmaster that became world champion of public speaking five years later.

A tough act to evaluate, but club sponsor Warren, followed up by Julia, Daniela and Simon rose to the challenge to deliver constructive evaluations. Our table topics session was chaired by Ross (first time table topics master – congratulations!) using a variety of improvisation techniques using both coins “what happened to you in the year this coin was struck” or unusual words like albertpolis. Assistant division B governor Neil Coleman closed the evening with his general evaluation.

Who we gonna call? Toastmasters! – 20th January meeting

Last week may have been cold in the streets, but the cold stayed well clear of our lovely home of the Windsor Castle Pub. Toastmaster of the evening Andy, led us through an evening run like a clockwork, with three functionaries helping him! Congratulations to Rosie for keeping a steady hand on time, to grammarian Daniela who unleashed a good muse into the room and vote counter Fahad looking after these oh so useful feedback slips!

Recently joined member, Anne opened the fray with her ice-breaker speech titled “Beyond Borders” on the diversity of her origins and the multiple cultural strands that make up her family. Vice-President Membership, Terry followed with a number four speech from the Competent Communicator manual, “Yellow”. We were treated to a flurry of beautiful language and to a journey to the grounds of the golden boys of Watford F.C. The finish of the evening was an advanced speech from the Persuasive Speaking manual, done by Marina Lussich. She led us through an interactive demonstration of cold-calling, highlighting the pitfalls to avoid (e.g. poor research of the target) and tips to follow.

Our three speeches were evaluated by Ross (first time evaluator – congratulations!), Florian and Marcel. Some of the points covered, were the importance of vocal variety and “less is more” in the case of using descriptive or advanced language. Our usual mingling break followed, with numerous guests including returning ones asking to take part in table topics later and asking questions about the club.

A hugely entertaining table topics session followed led by Fahad Alturkait, featuring questions such as “How do you explain a chair to an alien?” or “how to you explain women to men?”. Each of these worth a philosophical treatise, but to be tacked in one to two minutes only!

A splendid Victorian start to 2015 – 6th & 8th January

As befitted our first meeting in 2015, the theme of the evening of Tuesday 6th of January toastmastered by our Vice-President Education Fahad Alturkait was New Year resolutions. Timekeeper Anne was in charge of our lights for her first role in the club – well done Anne! – And grammarian Edwin offered us “anew” as word of the day.

The first speaker of the evening was Ross Colman “2014 – a bad year for aviation safety?” His answer to this question was a very firm no and we embarked on a journey across the various safety systems equipping modern airliners for fire extinguishers in engines to collision avoidance mechanisms. Kohinoor followed with the first speech from the Entertaining Speaker manual titled “New Year Resolutions”. Our professional speaker Sergey concluded the prepared speeches, with an interactive seminar “how to create a powerful story” using a cartoon from 1898 as imagination trigger.

Evaluators Florian, Warren and George then entered the fray highlighting among other points the importance of vocal variety and a strong beginning and conclusion. A table topics session in which several of our very numerous guests that evening followed, led by Marina.

Thursday 8th of January also several club members and Toastmasters from all over London doing a demonstration meeting in Cardinal Place. A highly interactive meeting focusing on table topics took place, led by Sergey as Toastmaster. Our shiny new banner led the marketing blitz by the escalators to hundreds of offices working whizzing by, most of them with a leaflet “London Victorians – Conquer your fear of public speaking” in their hands!

London Victorians takes over Paris!

London Victorians President at Club Expressions Paris

Shortly after planning my Christmas break in Paris with my family, I could not resist the chance to have a look and wonder “perhaps one of Paris’ Toastmasters club will meeting while I am here”. Lo and behold, Toastmasters Expressions was due to meet on Monday 22nd December. A brief e-mail exchange with friendly fellow president Emmanuelle followed and I was now general evaluator of this meeting!

Upon arrival I was welcomed by no less than the governor of the division encompassing Northern France, Odile scheduled to be our grammarian that evening. The familiar flurry of pre-meeting activity followed; tables and chairs laid out, agendas distributed and introductions made. Unlike most London based clubs, Toastmasters clubs in France follow a different format, with the Toastmasters only chairing the first half of the meeting comprising table topics and prepared speeches. The three speeches of the evening by Ladji, Aicha and Emmanuelle, comprised two speeches from the CC manual (Savoir Communiquer) and one advanced speech from the speaking to inform manual (Parler pour Informer). As befits the place, a buffet of bread, cheese, saucisson and wine brought by a club member crowned the break.

The evaluation section followed with myself introducing the four evaluators in turn, followed by the timekeeper and grammarian and concluded by a general evaluation. Carefully observing each evaluator in between introducing them, being an extra challenge to an already challenging but rewarding role!

Expressions lived up to its credentials as a well-established French speaking club, with three amazing speeches, supportive evaluations and a warm hospitable atmosphere!

Whenever you go don’t forget to check! There might be a club you can visit and where a role might be up for grabs! Toastmasters is your network of friendly and like-minded people cutting across borders, so what are you waiting for, use it!
