Overview
Writing a speech might seems like a scary thing to do at first sight. This will especially be the case if you have limited writing experience and simply don’t know where to start. Relax! We’ve all been there before and the process will become easier as you gain experience and confidence.
Just keep in mind a few general guidelines at all times:
-
Start small – Your first speech need not be a complicated thesis on neuroscience, the economic history of London or a keynote address on how to end war or poverty. A speech about yourself, your hobbies or your favourite food is fine!
-
Focus is key – Set a few hours of your time aside to write your speech and avoid unnecessary distractions during that time.
-
Remember your audience – Toastmasters audiences tend to like personal stories and to be curious about everything. However, try to avoid anything too controversial or “dry”.
